As of April 2017, the MTF survey data in Ethiopia shows that 33.1% of households have grid access, while 23.9% have access through off-grid solutions.  Using the MTF definition of access, 44.3% of households nationwide are in Tier 1 or above for access to electricity.  There is a wide disparity in the access rates between rural and urban households – 28.2% of rural households have Tier 1 or above for access to electricity, while 96.5% of urban households have the same level of access.

According to the MTF survey data, as of 2017, 63.3% of Ethiopian households use a three-stone stove as their primary stove, 13.6% use a self-built stove, 18.2% use a manufactured biomass stove, and 4.1% use a clean fuel stove with electricity.  Using the MTF definition, most of the households in Ethiopia are in MTF Tiers 0-3 (98.5 %) and only 1.5 % of the households are in Tier 4 or above.  A larger share of households in urban areas are in Tier 4 or above (5.1%) as compared to households in rural areas (0.4%).
